Galería Las Américas
Los Angeles, CA
March 11-June 10, 1994
On Friday, March 11, 1994, from 7-10 pm, GALERIA LAS AMERICAS will offer an Opening Reception to inaugurate this specially selected group exhibition of four outstanding Chicano and Latino American artists.
JULIO GARCIA, a prolific and talented painter from Baja, California, will present a major suite of mystic works portraying a personal relationship to space, dreams, thought, and vision. Brilliantly conceived and highly meticulous in nature, these mixed media works on paper defy the viewer to reevaluate one’s concept of reality. The viewer’s mind must literally bend to comprehend the message. The final result is mesmerizing, stimulating, and highly intellectual.
Mexican artist, ISABEL MARTINEZ, received her M.F.A. from Cal St L.A. This exceptionally gifted and renowned artist creates images addressing the personal journey of an immigrant, struggling and suffering to find a new home and country. Graphic images of cruelty, loss and demeaning labor
appear in brilliant pastel colors with intermixed collage technique. Martinez’s work successfully discusses the rage and disappointment of living as an invisible citizen, struggling to live a significant life.
TEDDY SANDOVAL, a Chicano artist well known in California circles over the past twenty years, creates a portfolio of whimsical and inviting works. Using a personally developed technique, reminiscent of classical Renaissance fresco work, this artist combines apparently ancient surface
with contemporary icon, to create a modern image filled with joy and humor. Complex in focus, these works intrigue and the attract the viewer to take a long second look.
RUDY TORRES, whose work can be coined as “barrio funk,” accomplishes the psychedelic and the absurd. Acrylic on canvas and works on paper defy reality with dream-like, urban landscapes demanding the viewer to use all powers of complete concentration. The color scheme resonates from ancient Mexican festival color-schemes, while the complexity of each narrative work mirrors the intricacy of a labyrinth.
GALERIA LAS AMERICAS represents over 40 artists from South America, Central America, Mexico, Cuba, Spain and the United States, and has recently celebrated a FOURTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY IN BUSINESS listed in “Quien es Quien” in U.S. Commerce 1994.
