Reclining Venus

Reclining Venus, 2012
Acrylic, 14k gold leaf, repurposed plaster
13 x 22 x 5.5 in.
from the collection of Bruce Johnston and Tom Noll

This piece superimposes two disparate historical traditions symbolized by a reproduction of Madame RĂ©camier painted by Jacques-Louis David (1800), her skin incongruously brown, and the venerated Latino image of the Virgen de Guadalupe to pose questions about female iconography, power, and position.
