The 2018 WCA Annual Conference will be held at the DoubleTree Downtown in Los Angeles, February 22–24, 2018 to coincide with the College Art Association (CAA) Annual Conference. The conference highlight will be Saturday’s 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony and Gala dinner. This year’s honorees are Lee Bontecou, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Glora Orenstein, and Renée Stout. Kathy Gallegos and Amelia Jones will receive President’s Awards for Art and Activism.
Days will be filled with a mix of workshops, panels, networking, art crawls and special tours alongside WCA Chapters’ Council and Caucus Meetings. Nearby museums, galleries, restaurants and the Metro are ready for urban exploring.
Added highlights include workshops on “SmartPhone Video” and “Writing for Artists” on Friday morning. The “Women Around Town” Bus Tour on Thursday stops at 18th St. Arts Center to visit Lita Albuquerque’s studio then onto to Santa Monica Airport for the national exhibition Art Speaks! reception. Light refreshments will be served and artist studios will be open.
WCA will host multiple events at CAA including a WCA / CAA morning panel co-chaired by Tina Takemoto and Jacqueline Francis of California College of the Arts, and an In Memoriam panel on the work of Linda Nochlin. “Gloria’s Call,” a short film on LTA Awardee Gloria Orenstein’s journey into surrealism will debut at noon on Friday. Join the “Downtown Art Crawl” or take off on your own to discover downtown LA’s busy art scene on Friday afternoon. Grab a bite and make ArtShare LA your evening hub.
The Young Women’s Caucus will host a reception for the “Reality Sandwiches” exhibition juried by Alison Saar and performances curated by Zoe Charlton will follow at ArtShare LA.Saturday features The Feminist Art Project’s day of panels at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) organized by LA curators Jamillah James and Lanka Tattersall. Marsha Rosler will give the keynote address. Then it’s time for the WCA Lifetime Achievement Awards ceremony and dinner. The “Welcome Hour” cash bar gives everyone a chance to shift gears. Tickets for the bus tour, performances and Awards Dinner are included in all conference packages.
