This piece discusses the politics of class and color within communities of color. By changing the skin color of the man and woman in Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt’s (1907-1908) “The Kiss,” making the man is much darker than the fair skinned woman, I have raised questions about the conflicts created by “shades of brown.”
